FAQ:

1: How is the fridge recycled?

All Refrigeration equipment is degassed prior to being put into a shredding machine to be shredded to recover the CFC gas in the foam and also the metals and foam to be separated for further recycling. These pieces are then automatically separated into the various metal, plastic, copper, circuit board streams for individual collection and transportation to specialist recovery plants for further recycling and reuse as raw materials. All work fully complies with the WEEE directive and UK laws.

2.Why fridges are hazardous waste
Fridges are hazardous for several reasons, they are both dangerous and environmentally hazardous. Fridges use two main types of refrigeration gas for cooling. One is Isopropane, which is a flammable gas and can cause explosion if not removed correctly. The other gas is a really cold gas, which whilst it will give someone a freezer burn like frost bite, its main damage is to the environment. This cold gas is actually a CFC gas and is contained not only in the gas but also trapped in the foam of the fridge. When the fridge foam is shredded this gas is released and if not captured goes to atmosphere where it contributes to the warming of the climate due to depletion of the ozone layer.

  1. How do I get rid of an old refrigerator responsibly?
Recycling of a Refrigerator correctly is essential to save our planet and prevent not only global warming but also a visit from the Environment agency, if you use the wrong company or people to collect your waste.

Why? I hear you ask!

If you use a none licenced waste carrier, to collect the old fridges for disposal and they then, instead of taking them to a licenced site for fridge recycling, just tip them on the side of the road, you are still liable for that fridge. If the fridge or waste can be traced back to you then you will have to pay again for the correct recycling as well as the potential for a court case for fly tipping.
